The exact size is printed on the anchor packaging in most cases; when it is not, a 6 mm bit for a standard 8 mm anchor is a safe starting point. Drill straight into the wall, blow or brush the dust out of the hole, and tap the anchor in until it is flush. Insert the screw through the bracket and drive it until the anchor expands and grips the back of the drywall.

For a toggle bolt, drill a clearance hole large enough for the folded wings to pass through, insert the bolt through the bracket, thread the wings on, and push the assembly through the wall. If the wall surface is tile or stone, switch to a specialty tile bit and drill at low speed with light pressure. Tape the surface first to stop the bit from skating across the glazed finish, and stop as soon as the bit passes through the tile into the material behind it.
